What services does IMPŌ offer?

From a tax perspective, who qualifies as a newcomer?
From a tax perspective, a newcomer is an individual who recently arrived in Canada. Newcomers may be refugees or individuals who previously lived in another Canadian province or territory, for example.
Do I have to file a tax return even if I didn’t earn any income?
As soon as you or your spouse are given a Social Insurance Number (SIN), you must file an income tax return each year.
Which documents do I have to prepare for filing my income tax return?
Based on your answers to our questionnaire, you will see a list of the documents required for filing your income tax return in the Documents tab of your Client Portal. Please note that you can upload any documents you feel are relevant and our experts will look through them and make sure that your tax credits are maximized. Here is a checklist of documents to help you get started.
Do I have to report income earned outside of Canada?
You must declare all income that you earned around the world as of your arrival date in Canada. This includes rental income and investment income, for example. Please note that Canada has treaties with certain other countries regarding double taxation. For more information, call us.
Why do I have to file an income tax return?
Essentially, you are required to file an income tax return if:
- You owe tax for the year in question.
- You realized a taxable capital gain or disposed of a capital asset during the year.
- You are a non-resident and you disposed of a taxable Canadian property (for example, a property located in Canada, whether or not you made a capital gain).
Please note that when you file your income tax return, you will benefit from the assistance programs, tax deductions and tax benefits that you’re entitled to.
